Pavelius smileyi can be up to 28 mm long. It is only known from Loki Castle vent field, Norwegian Sea at 2350 meters depth.

Key characters

Measurements: Up to 28 mm long.

Number of thoracic chaetigers: 14

Number of thoracic uncinigers: 11

Number of abdominal uncinigers: 20–21.

Prostomium: Broadly rounded, without lobes or glandular ridges; eyespots absent.

Mouth tentacles: Smooth.

Branchiae: Four pairs of branchiae arranged close together in transverse row without median gap.

Paleae: Absent.

Special features: None.

Pygidium: Lateral cirri absent.

Tube: Thin organic layer incrusted with thick layer of mud.

Distribution

Only known from Loki Castle vent field, Norwegian Sea; 2350 m.

Similar species

The prostomium without lobes or glandular ridges, in combination with the four pairs of branchiae arranged in a single transverse row, makes it unlikely to confuse adult complete specimens of Pavelius smileyi with any other species of Ampharetidae in Norwegian waters.
