Ampharete goesi can be up to 50 mm long. It can be found around Svalbard and Bear Island at depths between 35 and 170 meters.

Type locality

Spitsbergen, Svalbard (Treurenbergbay (Sorgfjorden?), Wydebay (Wijdefjorden?), Danesgat (Danskegattet?), Haklyts Headland (Hakluytodden?), Safehavn (Trygghavna?), Bellsund and Whalerspoint (Entire North West corner of Spitzbergen is littered with places used by whalers, none of these places are called Whalerspoint today)), 40­–90 m.

Measurements: Up to 50 mm long.

Number of thoracic chaetigers, excluding paleae: 14

Number of thoracic uncinigers: 12

Number of abdominal uncinigers: 17

Prostomium: Trilobed; one pair of eyespots.

Mouth tentacles: Papillose.

Branchiae: Four pairs of branchiae in two groups separated by a distance equal to one branchial base diameter; three branchiae in each group in transverse row, fourth branchia located behind middle one of the three; branchial bases on each side fused.

Paleae: Long and stout with curved tips; 10–23 chaetae on each side.

Special features: None

Pygidium: With two long lateral cirri and several small rounded papillae.

Tube: Thick layer of organic secretion incrusted with silt and shell fragments.

Distribution

Svalbard and Bear Island; 35–170 m (Holthe 1986a).

Similar species

The long stout paleae, in combination with the long abdomen (17 uncinigers), makes it unlikely to confuse adult complete specimens of Ampharete goesi with any other Ampharetidae in Norwegian waters.
