Sigalionids are elongated scale worms with numerous segments and pairs of elytra. They are distinguished from other scale worms by having compound chaetae on the neuropodia. Sigalionids are carnivorous and mainly live in soft bottom sediments where they can burrow rapidly if they feel in danger.

Characteristics

Sigalionids are scale worms with long, narrow bodies, and provided with numerous segments, 15–300, and pairs of elytra. The surface of the elytra may display tubercles, papillae or other ornamentation. The dorsal cirri are only present on segment 3, and unlike Polynoidae and other scale worms, sigalionids have compound chaeta on the neuropodia.
