Melinnids have traditionally been considered to be a subfamily within Ampharetidae, but in a paper by Stiller et al. (2020) they were raised to family level. They are detritovores and use their mouth tentacles to collect detritus particles. They inhabit soft sediments from intertidal to abyssal depths and live in tubes which they construct of sediment particles attached to a thin layer of secreted material.
